Lagos Green Roof Resilience Project

The Lagos Green Roof Resilience Project was created by Sustainable Solutions for Green Growth to address climate change and environmental challenges in Lagos, Nigeria, particularly in communities like Yaba and Ijora Badia. These areas face flooding, air pollution, and the urban heat island effect. The project aims to introduce green roofs as an innovative solution to these challenges and enhance community resilience.

Urbanization and Vulnerability:

Lagos, a densely populated coastal city, confronts extreme weather events and rapid urbanization. Marginalized communities like Yaba and Ijora Badia, situated near water bodies, are vulnerable to flooding and sea-level rise. High-density living worsens the urban heat island effect.

Air Pollution and Health Impacts:

Air pollution from inadequate waste management, carbon emissions, traffic congestion, and industrial activities affects residents' health, leading to respiratory illnesses and increased healthcare costs.

Green Roof Innovation:

The Lagos Green Roof Resilience Project introduces green roofs with drought-resistant native plants. Locally available materials are used for substrate, drainage, and structure to minimize the project's environmental footprint. Recycled waterproofing and anti-root materials enhance sustainability and maintain roof integrity.

Transformative Objectives:

  • Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG): Aiming for a 20% reduction in GHG emissions.

  • Energy Consumption Reduction: Targeting a 25% reduction in energy consumption.

  • Flooding Mitigation via Stormwater Management: Aiming for a 40% decrease in stormwater runoff.

  • Improving Biodiversity: Targeting a 15% increase in local plant and animal species.

  • Air Quality Improvement: Aiming for a 25% reduction in key air pollutants.

  • Community Cohesion: Aiming for a 70% participation rate of community members in project activities.

Project Innovation:

The project pioneers green roofs in low-income communities and promotes community engagement. It enhances climate resilience, air quality, and sustainability where such initiatives are typically overlooked.
